Senior Software Engineer - Global Forwarding Technology

C.H Robinson is seeking a Senior Software Engineer role on our Global Forwarding team which is expanding engineering capacity to support a growing portfolio of strategic modernization and automation initiatives. In this role, you will help design and deliver scalable solutions across the Global Forwarding platform and provide technical leadership as we continue modernizing how freight is planned, priced, booked, and executed. You will partner closely with engineering product managers, business stakeholders, and other leaders to define, estimate, and design complex, strategic solutions that delight our customers. You are responsible for driving innovation through leadership, influence and discussions. In addition, the role is also responsible for impacting and continuously improving our engineering process and mentoring other engineers across the organization. This role can be based only in MN, IL or Kansas City DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The duties and responsibilities of this position consist of, but are not limited to, the following: Lead the design and development of scalable software solutions that modernize and automate complex workflows across Global Forwarding Translate ambiguous business and customer problems into durable technical solutions spanning pricing and rating, carrier contracts, shipment planning and execution, booking, visibility, documents, and operational workflows Design and build AI-enabled and agentic solutions that automate repetitive knowledge work, assist with complex decision-making, and reduce manual intervention across the shipment lifecycle Identify opportunities to apply large language models, intelligent agents, workflow orchestration, retrieval-augmented generation, and other AI capabilities to real business processes Develop AI-assisted workflows that can interpret unstructured and semi-structured information, take appropriate actions across systems, and safely escalate exceptions to people when human judgment is required Establish patterns for reliable enterprise AI, including evaluation, observability, human-in-the-loop controls, grounding, security, auditability, and appropriate guardrails Experiment rapidly with emerging AI and agentic technologies, validate their business value, and evolve successful prototypes into maintainable production capabilities Define interfaces and develop code across applications, APIs, services, data platforms, and shared capabilities; influence architectural direction across multiple product areas Partner with product, engineering, operations, and business stakeholders to deeply understand Global Forwarding workflows and identify opportunities for automation, simplification, and improved decision support Design solutions for high-volume operational environments where automation, resiliency, performance, and low-touch execution are critical Build integrations across a highly interconnected Global Forwarding ecosystem, including internal platforms, APIs, carrier systems, external partners, messaging, and event-driven architectures Provide technical leadership across initiatives that span multiple engineering teams and business domains, helping teams align on reusable patterns and common capabilities Increase code quality through design reviews, code reviews, automated testing, and engineering best practices Optimize, refactor, and reuse existing capabilities to improve performance, maintainability, scalability, and return on technology investment Proactively identify performance, reliability, availability, and security risks and drive resolution across multiple systems or product areas Write secure software and incorporate security, privacy, and data-governance considerations into traditional and AI-enabled solutions Develop and maintain thorough technical documentation, architectural guidance, and reusable engineering patterns Estimate software initiatives including dependencies, scope, effort, resources, technical risk, and skill needs Maintain deep awareness of emerging technologies and proactively identify where advances in AI, cloud, automation, and software engineering can create meaningful business value Mentor and coach software engineers through architecture discussions, design and code reviews, pairing, knowledge sharing, and technical leadership Collaborate with engineering and product leadership to unblock teams, resolve complex technical problems, and successfully deliver high-quality software Work across organizational boundaries to reduce duplication, strengthen shared platform capabilities, and help evolve a cohesive Global Forwarding technology ecosystem Other duties or responsibilities as assigned according to the team and/or country-specific requirements Required Qualifications: 8+ years of experience developing and implementing commercial software Strong experience designing and developing applications in an object-oriented environment (ex. C#, .NET) Experience designing distributed systems, APIs, services, and integrations across multiple applications or domains Experience with database design and development using relational databases (ex. MS SQL, Oracle), including schema design, stored procedures, performance tuning, and optimization Experience with non-relational databases and modern data-storage patterns Experience with HTTP, REST APIs, event-driven architectures, and asynchronous processing Experience with unit, integration, acceptance, and automated testing strategies Experience with version control systems (ex. Git, GitHub, TFS, etc.) Experience with CI/CD and modern software delivery practices Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems that span multiple systems, teams, or business domains Ability to quickly understan
