Description of Work Location of Position: This position is assigned to the Security Accountability Section. This position supports the High-Risk Transport Committee, which evaluates offender behavior history, training, and expertise to determine whether specialized transport is required due to potential escape risk. The role conducts unannounced, security focused reviews of facility operations and leads investigations into security lapses or failures. It is also responsible for investigating unanticipated offender deaths. The Security Specialist must have strong expertise in the use, assessment, and evaluation of specialized weapons, security equipment, chemical munitions, and other security technologies. This knowledge is essential for advising on the selection, deployment, and effectiveness of tools and equipment. The position works directly with Prison Administration to coordinate the Security Review Committee, which research, evaluates, and recommends security systems and equipment for use across prison facilities. The specialist also serves as a liaison with vendors and provides recommendations on security related equipment purchases. Security Specialist develops and updates policies related to security operations and serve as members of the division’s State Emergency Response Team (SERT). This role requires staying current on best practices and emerging research in offender custody, security, and program management, as well as applying basic psychological principles relevant to the offender population. The position requires the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with offenders, their families, staff, and external partners; communicate clearly and concisely in both oral and written formats; and think quickly and act decisively during emergencies. Additional responsibilities include participating in various committees as assigned by the supervisor. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Salary Grade Range: $50,088.00 - $87,654.00 Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement.
