Protein Chemist III

The Protein Chemist III essential duties and responsibilities according to Standard Operating Procedures ensuring accuracy and quality throughout the processes. Perform process improvements, product transfers, troubleshooting, and training.  Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Formulate chemical reagents from stock with direction from the appropriate Standard Manufacturing Procedure (SMP) or Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). Conduct chemical reactions for development of reagents with direction from the appropriate Standard Manufacturing Procedure (SMP) or Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). Works with hazardous mycotoxin powders and concentrated mycotoxin stocks utilizing proper personal protective equipment including a glove box containment system Works with flours derived from food commodities for use in detection of potentially allergenic proteins like milk, gluten, nut, etc. Perform in process quality testing and product release testing with direction from the appropriate Standard Manufacturing Procedure (SMP) or Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). Follow International Organization for Standardization (ISO) guidelines in the manufacture of all reagents. Use good manufacturing procedures (GMP) and good documentation practices (GDP) in the manufacture of all reagents. Participate and lead in validation and verification procedures for raw material qualification. Participate and lead in troubleshooting efforts pertaining to product failures. Participate and lead in product/process improvement of current products. Assist Supervisor and Manager in maintenance of raw material inventory and/or lab supplies Maintains the general cleanliness and organization of work areas using lean processes and 5S Operation, maintenance, and calibration of basic equipment necessary to perform job functions Adheres to any and all safety rules and regulations, including personal protective equipment, proper use of equipment, proper disposal of any and all materials etc. Plans and executes necessary preparatory processes for scheduled manufacturing duties in advance Responsible for equipment preventative maintenance of specialized and advanced equipment Participate in new product transfers Produce, compile, and analyze data sets generated for raw material qualification, product release testing and/or troubleshooting efforts Prepares and presents reports and analysis of data as required Assist in physical inventories, cycle counts, or inventory discrepancy reconciliations as required. Propose, conduct, and lead product/process improvement of current products or processes Proposes and completes document updates and improvements. Can delegate document updates to Protein Chemist I and II. Generates and submits Non-Conforming Material Reports to the appropriate approval committee(s) Assist Supervisor with scheduling throughput for product manufacture, troubleshooting, and experimentation Train new incoming staff on all processes, procedures, and handling and disposal of hazardous materials Provides support to all Chemistry staff in the absence of Supervisor and/or Manager/or team lead Provides interdepartmental communication and interaction in the absence of the Supervisor and/or Manager/or team lead Attends meetings as requested and in the absence of the Supervisor and/or Manager/or team lead. Reviews and provides sign off on batch records Generate, edit, and review experimental designs submitted by staff in MEMO format Perform other duties as assigned by your supervisor and/or manager Comply with and promote all corporate handbook policies Comply with, promote and strive to achieve all corporate and departmental goals Comply with, promote and strive to achieve all productivity, quality, and behavior expectations. Education and Experience Education and Experience: Minimum BS degree in Protein Chemistry, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biological Science, Immunology, Microbiology, Food Science, or related science field.  3-5 years of research, laboratory, manufacturing experience and/or related work experience.  Knowledge and understanding of cGMPs and ISO is desired. Candidates should have experience in protein characterization, organic synthesis, bioanalytical assay development and execution, data analysis, and scientific data presentation.   Mathematical Skills: Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers, multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s and calculate percent.  Ability to perform these calculations using units of American weight and measurement.  Ability to perform routine, college-level mathematical operations Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedural documents.  Computer Skills :   To perform this job successfully, an individual should have some knowledge of Microsoft Office software as well as the ability to effectively communicate electronically.
