If your answer is yes, then we want you to join our team at the Utilities Commission and make a difference. The Utilities Commission is looking for a Court Reporter. This position is assigned to the Legal Division of the North Carolina Utilities Commission. The primary purpose of the Court Reporter is to provide accurate, timely verbatim records of North Carolina Utilities Commission proceedings. The position reports public and expert witness testimony stenographically at 180–200 words per minute during hearings in Raleigh and throughout North Carolina, including rate cases, oral arguments, complaints, show cause proceedings, and other utility matters. Stenography equipment and software will be provided. Key responsibilities include: • Researching dockets and case materials to become familiar with relevant terminology, names, and acronyms. • Reporting and maintaining the official record of Commission hearings and weekly Staff Conferences. • Transcribing, editing, proofreading, and filing official transcripts within statutory deadlines. • Coordinating travel and reimbursement documentation for out-of-town hearings. • Working professionally and effectively with Commissioners, Commission staff, Public Staff, attorneys, utility representatives, witnesses, and the public. The position requires exceptional accuracy, attention to detail, knowledge of spelling, grammar, punctuation, and legal and technical terminology, and the ability to meet strict deadlines while maintaining confidentiality and impartiality. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits, including health insurance, as well as retirement. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Working knowledge of legal and court procedures, legal terminology, and the format and preparation of common legal documents. Considerable knowledge of business English, including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and proofreading, with the ability to prepare accurate and timely transcripts. Demonstrated ability to independently interpret and follow written and oral instructions, established policies, procedures, and regulations, including agency-specific requirements and proceedings. Proficiency in computer-aided translation software and other computer applications necessary to efficiently perform court reporting, transcription, and administrative duties.
