Intern Position Descriptions
Core Thermal Hydraulics Intern
The CTH Intern will develop intermediate fidelity (IF) subchannel and high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models for applications in sodium fast reactors (SFRs). The project will involve comparisons between simulation results and experimental data. The exact topic will depend on interest and company needs but could cover fluid-structure interaction, turbulence model development, uncertainty quantification, or surrogate modeling.
Required Qualifications
Coursework in fluid mechanics and heat transfer
Experience with 3-D CFD and meshing workflows
Proficiency in Python
Clear technical communication and documentation skills
Bonus Qualifications
Experience with advanced 3-D CFD concepts (large eddy simulation, fluid-structure interaction)
Familiarity with high-performance computing workflows and tools
Experience with MOOSE
Familiarity with statistics and reduced order modeling
Fuel Performance Intern
Working with members of Oklo’s Materials and Fuel Performance Team, this intern will explore the potential of lower-order fuel performance models to help accelerate our core-design iteration.
Key Responsibilities
Assess the trade-off between computational cost and accuracy of lower-order fuel performance models
Distill key phenomena for a variety of safety and design applications in order to calibrate simplified models against validation cases
Benchmark new fuel performance tools
Integrate original analysis and data processing into our production stack
Required Qualifications
Fluency in Python (or another object-oriented programming language)
Prior experience with finite element analysis (FEA)
Background in nuclear engineering and familiarity with reactor physics
Motivated learner who is adept at efficiently summarizing literature
Bonus Qualifications
Exposure to the MOOSE modeling suite
Strong understanding of statistics and/or uncertainty quantification
Coursework or research related to materials science
Mechanical Analyst Intern
This intern will contribute to the evaluation and optimization of mechanical components that are critical to Oklo’s advanced power plant designs. This position offers hands-on experience in applying engineering fundamentals, performing structural analysis, and integrating results into design iterations.
Key Responsibilities
Apply first-principles mechanics and strength of materials to support analysis of structural components
Assist in summarizing mechanical analysis results for design teams, highlighting key findings such as peak stresses, margins of safety, and potential design revisions
Support the development of technical documentation, ensuring clear and concise communication of assumptions, methods, and results
Collaborate with design, manufacturing, and testing teams to help inform design improvements
Required Qualifications
Working toward a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science, or a related discipline
Strong foundation in mechanics of materials, dynamics, and heat transfer
Exposure to FEA tools (e.g., Ansys, Abaqus, COMSOL, or similar) through coursework or projects
Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or another programming language for basic data analysis or workflow automation
Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly document and present technical findings
Bonus Qualifications
Prior research or project experience involving creep, fatigue, or thermal-mechanical problems
Familiarity with engineering codes and standards (e.g., ASME, AISC, or similar)
Experience using Git or another version control system
Instrumentation and Controls Intern
This intern will contribute to the development, integration, and testing of measurement and control systems that support advanced reactor operation and power generation. This position provides hands-on exposure to sensors, automation, and control strategies, while giving interns the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to real-world engineering challenges.
Key Responsibilities
