It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Description of Work This position is located at Craven Correctional Institution in Vanceboro, NC, Craven County. The prison is a Medium Custody Adult Male Felon Diagnostic Processing Center which houses 850 offenders. Employees in this class are first-line supervisors to Correctional Officer II’s in the medium custody facility, increasing the custody and security coverage. Key Duties Include: - Assigning lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post after inspecting each staff and determining if they are physically and mentally capable. - Oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of offenders is maintained. - Arrange work schedules to ensure adequate shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations a re followed according to policy. - Complete, review and maintain time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations and other administrative forms. - Account for persons and assets to ensure that all assigned equipment is operationally ready. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Salary Range: $39,244 - $68,679 Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the Minimum Education and Experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/Management Preferences are not required but applicants who possess the following skills are preferred: · Ability to prepare reports · Ability to supervise and evaluate the work of subordinate custody staff. • Thorough knowledge of disciplinary procedures and techniques appropriate for persons under criminal confinement. • Thorough knowledge of procedures, rules, and regulations associated with the control and management of inmates; and of correctional methods, techniques, practices, and procedures. About the Division of Institutions : The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.
