The primary focus of this position is manufacturing large aluminum aerospace structures using fusion welding and friction stir welding processes. This is a welding engineering position. Education and experience relevant to this position will be evaluated from that perspective. The position's primary responsibilities are to:
Develop welding techniques, procedures, and application of welding equipment to problems involving fabrication of metals, utilizing knowledge of production specifications, properties and characteristics of metals and metal alloys, and engineering principles.
Conduct research and development investigations to develop and test new welding processes and procedures, improve existing or develop new welding equipment, develop new or modify current welding methods, techniques, and procedures, discover new patterns of welding phenomena, or to correlate and substantiate hypotheses.
Prepare technical reports resulting from research and development.
Establish welding procedures to guide production and welding personnel relating to specification restrictions, material processes, pre- and post-weld heating requirements which involve use of complex alloys, unusual fabrication methods and welding of critical joints.
Evaluate new developments in welding field for possible application to current welding problems or production processes.
Direct and coordinate technical personnel in performing inspections to ensure workers' compliance with established welding procedures, restrictions, and standards.
Exchange ideas, information, or offer technical advice concerning welding matters.
Perform experimental welding to evaluate new equipment, techniques, and materials.
Serve as project lead engineer to manage specific assigned customer welding development and manufacturing development projects.
Help other EM32 W&M Team customers understand and resolve problems related to their welding manufacturing processes.
The selected candidate will serve as a communication or focal point for welding and welding manufacturing projects and work integrally with JSEG and customer engineers and engineering technicians particular engineering discipline effort or scientific initiative. The selected candidate performs work under the guidance of a senior engineer/scientist. The selected candidate performs assignments designed to develop professional working knowledge and abilities requiring application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria in carrying out a sequence of related engineering/science tasks. The selected candidate may be assisted by technicians, and others who assist in specific assignments. As development progresses and where appropriate, routine assignments may be performed independently and results reviewed for accuracy. For non-routine work or to resolve difficult problems, the supervisor provides techniques and procedures to be applied.

Previous exposure to developing inputs into paperless (electronic) manufacturing execution systems (MES) or helping perform work under MES.
Previous exposure to identifying and documenting manufacturing nonconformances.
Previous exposure to resolving manufacturing nonconformances under oversight boards.
Previous experience working with the following specifications and standards or industry equivalents is desired, but not required:
NASA-STD-6016, “Standard Materials and Processes Requirements for Spacecraft.”
NASA-STD-5006, “General Fusion Welding Requirements for Aerospace Materials Used in Flight Hardware.”
